Un año después del huracán: organización israelí sigue ayudando a Puerto Rico

Tras cumplirse un año desde que el Huracán María afectara gravemente a Puerto Rico, la organización humanitaria israelí IsraAID sigue trabajando para ayudar a los afectados por el desastre.

Recientemente la cifra oficial de muertes por el huracán en Puerto Rico fue actualizada de 64 a 2.975. Apenas unos días después de que el Huracán María afectara de forma considerable a Puerto Rico, un equipo de emergencia de la organización israelí IsraAID llegó a la isla para proveer ayuda.

En una fase inicial IsraAID distribuyó filtros de agua para cerca de 6.000 personas, gestionó 6 clínicas médicas móviles donde trataron a cientos de personas y brindaron asistencia psicológica a los afectados que estaban durmiendo en albergues.

Tras la primera fase de emergencia, el equipo de IsraAID se ha enfocado en desarrollar programas de larga duración para acompañar a los puertorriqueños en su camino a la recuperación. En octubre de este año, IsraAID junto a la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico completarán la construcción de un sistema de filtrado de agua para Barrio Real, una comunidad alejada que no está conectada a la infraestructura hídrica de la isla. Después de que el huracán destruyera la fuente de agua de la comunidad, los residentes quedaron sin acceso a agua potable.

Además, IsraAID ha entrenado a voluntarios de la comunidad judía de San Juan para que ayuden a proveer talleres personales de higiene y sobre uso seguro de agua para los residentes de Barrio Real.

La organización israelí se alió también con la organización local ASPIRA para brindar una alternativa escolar a 3.400 jóvenes en riesgo en toda la isla. Los especialistas de IsraAID están entrenando a maestros de ASPIRA para que puedan ayudar a los estudiantes a salir adelante y brindarles apoyo mientras se recuperan del devastador huracán María.

Yotam Polizer, co-Director General de IsraAID expresó: “En IsraAID estamos sorprendidos cada día por la fuerza, resiliencia y determinación de las comunidades de Puerto Rico con las que trabajamos y estamos comprometido con apoyar la recuperación de la isla tanto como haga falta”.
